Born at Springfield, Mass.

Was Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at Utica from 1813 to 1817. Compelled by the failure of his voice to retire from the ministry, he removed to Geneva and established there the first Bank which he conducted with *emiinent [eminent] ability. He was one of the Founders of the American Home Missionary *Sociaty [Society], and for twenty years its President, and thus continued to preach by the voices of others.
