Grandson of Alexander Hamilton, first Sec. of Treasury of the United States. Served in U S Army as Captain during the Mexican War.
Served in the 11th New York Infantry as Aide-de-Camp to Gen. Charles Sandford. Promoted to Major General during the
Civil War for using the newly invented gas ballons for enemy observation.
