[Served under General George R. Crook as aide de camp during the Indian Wars. Accepted the surrender of Chief Crazy Horse. Learned and recorded the Sign Language of the Plains Indians. Definitive work on the subject published posthumously. At the time of his death, a member of the staff of General Philip Sheridan.]*
